Portrait Commissions

Commissioning a portrait is a collaboration between artist and client that can be a joyous and inspiring experience. I love the entire process of getting to know my clients, hearing their stories, and creating a work of art that they and their families can look upon fondly for years to come. I like to be open and clear about my process so that everyone is comfortable, and their best most relaxed self shines through.

Meeting:

The initial meeting could be a phone call, and e-mail or an in person meeting, where we will discuss the kind of portrait you are seeking, in regards to the subject, setting, season and clothing. We will go over the process, price and the contract and I can answer any questions you may have. Once the contract is signed and a non refundable 1/3 deposit is secured, and the sitting will be scheduled in my calendar.

Sitting:

During the scheduled sitting of 2 to 3 hours, I will take reference photos, and depending on the time and subject, I may make a few quick sketches. In an attempt to achieve the most natural postures and expressions, it is sometimes best when working with children,  if the parent is not present through the whole session. You may check in periodically, but this generally allows your child and I to connect directly, resulting in a more natural and successful sitting. After the sitting, I will go through all the photos, notes and sketches to come up with the final compositional arrangement and either through e-mail, or in person, we will collaborate on the final composition and reference to be used.

Color Study:

I will then complete a small color study that will be the basis for the painting. It will provide you with a sense of composition, lighting and overall atmosphere of the final painting. A second 1/3  is required upon approval of the color study.

Painting:

I will then complete the painting in my studio.

Completion:

Once the portrait is finished, I will send a high quality photo of the painting to the client for approval before shipping. If the client is local, they may view the portrait in person. Once the final approval and payment are secured, I will deliver the painting.

Quality Guarantee:

I guarantee an exact likeness of the subject and will complete the portrait in a style consistent with my portfolio/website. I use the highest grade professional materials to ensure the painting is archival under proper conditions.

Payment:

A non-refundable deposit of 1/3 the total price is required when the contract is signed. A second 1/3 is required upon approval of the color study, and a final payment is required upon approval of the finished painting. Approval should take place within 30 days of receiving the e-mailed or printed final image, or the final in person approval. The painting will not be delivered until final payment has been received. After final payment and approval, the painting must be picked up, or shipping arranged, within 30 days. I do not have the capacity to store your painting. A fee of $10. a day will be charge for any work that is left beyond 30 days after final payment and approval.

Not included in the price: Framing, Shipping, Travel. Sales Tax (if client is in NY State)

Fees:

All Portraits are painted close to, or life sized.

Head & Shoulders – $1,200 – $3,000.

Half Figure (including hands) – $3,000. – $6,000.

Full Figure – $8,000.

Multiple Figures – each additional figure is 10% less than what their original pricing would be.

Example: A full figure sitting in a chair with a half figure standing behind with hands resting on the chair,
would be the price of the full figure plus 10% less of a half figure price.
